How Many Humans Are Needed To Survive Mars?



In reality, how many people need to survive on Mars? According to the latest mathematical models, the minimum number is 110 individuals.

Reporting from IFL Science, Jean-Marc Salotti, professor from the Bordeaux Institute of National Polytechnique (INP), took assumptions and made a scenario regarding the possibility of settling on another planet, viewed from a quantitative level.

To do this, Salotti first starts with a simple statement: that to survive, the time to meet the needs of daily living must be less than the work capacity of each individual.

Taking into account the productivity of residents of different ages, as well as giving time to sleep, eat, clean, and rest, the annual work capacity is estimated at 31.25% of life time.

Salotti identified five key areas that humans must focus on in life, namely ecosystem management (ensuring food and water supplies and caring for liveable environments), energy production (to produce electricity and gas vehicles), industry (including the stage of making objects from mining to mining production equipment), buildings (construction and building maintenance), and social activities (from caring for children to getting entertainment).

"If every settler on Mars is truly isolated and there is no possible division, then each individual must carry out all activities," Salotti wrote in a study published in Scientific Reports.

"With more people, it allows activities to be more efficient through specialization and to implement other industries," he added.

For some activities such as water management, the sharing factor is very high because it provides benefits for many people. As for agriculture, the cooperation factor is very low. Because, the large amount of food means more labor is needed.

Combining the "work sharing factor" with a survival plan on Mars previously formulated at a contest organized by the Mars Society, Salotti can calculate the minimum number of people needed to meet living conditions on Mars — 110 is a miraculous number.

Of course this is not an exact science, there are also several other assumptions. However, according to Salotti, the figure is the first quantitative assessment.

"Our method allows simple comparisons, opening debates about survival strategies and the best place to be able to successfully live on Mars," he concluded.
