The impressive landscapes on Earth can take a breath away. However, for Reuben Wu, that wasn't enough.
Wu — a photographer, visual artist, and music producer — feels that the planet's majestic mountains, glaciers and beaches are missing something. In particular, unnatural lighting.
The idea was born from mistakes. One night near Death Valley, California, Wu set up the camera to take a series of time-lapse photos in the dark. A truck passes by and sweeps away the scenery with its bright headlights.
At first, Wu shared: “I was really upset. However, when I saw the pictures, I was blown away. There's artificial lighting here in a natural environment. "
This gave the idea of trying to add light to other scenes where it wasn't: in a lake, in a canyon, on a high rock pillar in the desert.
He flew the drone with the lights in front of the camera, taking long exposures of 30 seconds. Then, he coats the image into a composite and in some images, touches it back to the final version to eliminate the drone leaving the light it was throwing.
What emerges are unsuitable otherworldly scenes, each a visual puzzle that challenges the viewer to figure out how such a scene might have appeared.
